A philosophy of essential perception

The circumference is not the center

Not everything that occupies our attention deserves to occupy our center.

01 / The Philosophy

What does it mean to see essentially?

centuitive adj.

Having intuition grounded in the center or core of something; perceiving the essential truth of a matter instinctively.

We live in an age of unprecedented access to information, yet access does not guarantee understanding. To perceive more is not necessarily to comprehend more. Centuitive begins with a different proposition: that the depth of understanding depends not solely on what we see, but on our capacity to recognize what is essential.

Three movements, from the surface inward

  1. What is actually here?

Every matter arrives with a surface: its framing, its volume, its first impression. Perception begins by noticing the presentation as a presentation, attending fully to what is there without mistaking it for all that is there.

  2. What is this, at its core?

Beneath the surface lies structure. Penetration is the movement inward: asking what holds the matter together, what would remain if the incidental were removed, and what everything else depends upon.

  3. What, then, should matter most?

Discernment is incomplete until it orders action. Prioritization gives the center its rightful weight, letting what is essential govern decisions and allowing what is peripheral to remain peripheral.

A manifesto in five propositions

  1. Information is not understanding.

  2. Visibility is not significance.

  3. The center is not always the middle.

  4. Intuition is not infallibility.

  5. To understand essentially is to distinguish what matters from what merely appears.

See beyond.

Understand within.

The Centuitive Framework

A Theory of Essential Perception and Discernment

Status
In development
Form
Theoretical framework
Areas of inquiry
Cognition, epistemology, decision-making, and intuitive judgment
Author
Josiah R. Manners

Intended scope

The framework is intended to develop a working theory of essential perception: how a person distinguishes what is fundamental in a matter from what is merely prominent, and how that capacity might be described, examined, and practiced. It is expected to draw on questions from cognition, epistemology, decision-making, and the study of intuitive judgment.

No findings have been published. This record will be updated as the work develops.
